PLC works in the way of “sequential scanning and continuous circulation”. That is, when the PLC is running, the CPU compiles the program in the user’s memory according to the user’s control requirements, and performs periodic cyclic scanning according to the instruction step number (or address number). If there is no jump instruction, the user program will be executed one by one from the first instruction until the end of the program. Then return to the first command and start the next round of scanning. In the process of each scan, the sampling of input signals and the refreshing of output status should also be completed.

A scan cycle of PLC must go through three stages: input sampling, program execution and output refresh.

In the input sampling stage, PLC reads the on-off status or input data of all input terminals temporarily stored in the input latch in sequence by scanning, and writes them into the corresponding input status registers, that is, refreshes the input. Then close the input port and enter the program execution phase.

At the program execution stage, PLC scans and executes each instruction according to the sequence in which the user program instructions are stored. After corresponding calculation and processing, the results are written into the output status register. All contents in the output status register change with the program execution.

Output refresh stage: when all instructions are executed, the on-off state of the output status register is sent to the output latch in the output refresh stage, and output by certain means (relay, transistor or thyristor) to drive the corresponding output device to work.
