Common PLC modules include:

CPU module, which is the hardware core of PLC. The main performance of PLC, such as speed and scale, is reflected by its performance.

Power module, which provides internal working power for PLC operation, and some can also provide power for input signals.

I/O module, which includes I/O circuit, is divided into modules of different specifications according to the number of points and circuit type.

Memory module, which mainly stores user programs, and some also provide additional working memory for the system. Memory modules are structurally attached to CPU modules.

The base plate and rack module provide the base plate for the installation of PLC modules and the bus for the connection between modules. Some backplanes use interface modules and some use bus interfaces. Different manufacturers or different types of PLCs from the same manufacturer are not the same.

The main box of small box-type PLC integrates the above modules into one box, and is divided into different specifications according to the number of I/O points that can be provided.

The box-type PLC also has an I/O expansion box, which does not contain CPU, but only has the functions of power supply and I/O unit. The expansion box also has different specifications according to the number of I/O points.

In addition to the above modules, PLC also has special or intelligent or functional modules. Such as A/D (analog in) module, D/A (analog out) module, high-speed counting module, position control module, temperature module, etc. These modules have their own CPUs, which can pre-process or post-process signals to simplify the control of complex program-controlled quantities by PLC CPU. The types and characteristics of intelligent modules are also very different. For PLC with good performance, these modules have many types and good performance.

Communication module, after connecting with PLC, can make PLC communicate with computer, or PLC communicate with PLC, and some can also communicate with other control components, such as frequency converter, temperature controller, or form a local network. The communication module represents the networking ability of PLC and represents an important aspect of PLC performance today.
