The central processing unit (CPU) of PLC is generally composed of controller, arithmetic unit and register, and these circuits are integrated in a chip. The CPU is connected with storage unit and input/output interface circuit through data bus, address bus and control bus.

Like ordinary computers, CPU is the control center of the whole PLC. It commands the PLC to work orderly according to the functions given by the system program in the PLC. CPU mainly completes the following tasks:

Receive and store programs and data input by users through input devices such as programmers.

Receive the status or data of field signals through I/O components by scanning, and store them in the input image register or data memory.

Diagnose the working fault of PLC internal circuit and syntax error in programming.

After the PLC enters the running state, it executes the user program, completes the processing, transmission and storage of various data and corresponding internal control signals, so as to complete various operations specified by user instructions.

Respond to requests from various peripheral devices (such as programmers, printers, etc.).

The random type of CPU used by PLC is different. At present, the small PLC is a single CPU system, while the medium and large PLC are dual CPU or even multi CPU systems. At present, there are three kinds of microprocessors commonly used in PLC: general-purpose microprocessors, monolithic microprocessors (that is, single chip microcomputers) and bit chip microprocessors.
