The structure of programmable controller is various, but the general principle of its composition is basically the same, which is based on microprocessor. It is usually composed of central processing unit (CPU), memory (RAM, ROM), input and output unit (I/O), power supply and programmer.
Central processing unit (CPU)
As the core of the whole PLC, CPU plays the role of commander in chief. CPU is generally composed of control circuit, arithmetic unit and register. These circuits are usually packaged on an integrated circuit chip. CPU is connected with storage unit and input/output interface circuit through address bus, data bus and control bus. The functions of the CPU are as follows: read instructions from the memory, execute instructions, take down an instruction, and process interrupts.
