The traditional distributed control system (DCS) has the characteristics of centralized monitoring, decentralized control and convenient operation. However, in practical application, it is also found that there are some deficiencies in the structure of DCS. For example, the control cannot be completely decentralized, and the risk is still relatively concentrated; Due to the non-openness of the system, products from different manufacturers cannot be interchanged and interconnected, which limits the user’s choice. Using fieldbus technology, the goal of developing FCS system is to improve the structure of control system and improve its performance and versatility in view of some shortcomings of existing DCS.
If FCS wants to replace DCS in practice, it should not only have the functions of DCS, but also overcome the disadvantages of DCS. FCS is superior to traditional DCS in terms of openness and decentralized control due to its fieldbus technology. However, as it is a new technology, even the standard itself has not yet been formulated and unified, so compared with mature DCS, FCS still has the following deficiencies.
Because the fieldbus standard itself is still in development, it brings difficulties to the development and testing of products. This, to a certain extent, has resulted in a small number of product developers and producers, a single variety of products and high prices.
In some cases, FCS cannot provide the existing control functions of DCS. Due to the limitation of the level of software and hardware, the function of its function block is not very strong and the variety is not complete; Field instruments can only form general control loops such as single loop, cascade, proportional control, etc. For complex and advanced control algorithms, they can not be realized in the instrument, and there is no good solution for the situation of multiple inputs and outputs in a single loop.
At present, there are few successful application examples of FCS, and it is difficult to evaluate the actual application effect. For these reasons, it will be a gradual process for FCS to replace DCS. In this process, some transitional system structures will appear, such as replacing some subsystems in DCS with FCS. The user connects the field bus equipment to an independent field bus network server, which is equipped with the upper network interface in DCS to connect the operation station, and communicates directly with the operation station. Corresponding communication and management software can be added to the DCS software system. In this way, there is no need to make major structural changes to the original control system.
