In the process of industrial production, a large number of switching values are controlled in sequence. It acts in sequence according to the logic conditions, controls the interlocking protection actions according to the logic relations, and collects a large number of discrete data. Traditionally, these functions are realized through pneumatic or electrical control systems. In 1968, GM (General Motors) of the United States proposed to replace the electrical control device. The following year, Digital Corporation of the United States developed a control device based on integrated circuit and electronic technology, which was first applied to electrical control by means of programming. This is the first generation of programmable controller, called Programmable Controller (PC).
After the development of personal computer (PC for short), in order to facilitate and reflect the functional characteristics of the programmable controller, the programmable controller was named as Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Now, PLC is still often referred to as PC.
There are many definitions of PLC. The definition of PLC by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is that programmable controller is an electronic system operated by digital operation, designed for application in industrial environment. It uses programmable memory to store instructions for logic operation, sequence control, timing, counting and arithmetic operation, and controls various types of machinery or production processes through digital and analog input and output. The programmable controller and its related equipment shall be designed according to the principle of easy integration with the industrial control system and easy expansion of its functions.
From the 1980s to the mid-1990s, PLC was the fastest growing period, with an annual growth rate of 30-40%. During this period, the ability of PLC to handle analog quantity, digital operation, human-machine interface and network has been greatly improved, and PLC has gradually entered the field of process control, replacing the dominant DCS system in the field of process control in some applications.
PLC has the characteristics of strong universality, convenient use, wide adaptability, high reliability, strong anti-interference ability and simple programming. The position of PLC in industrial automation control, especially in sequence control, cannot be replaced in the foreseeable future.
