The development of programmable controllers in China is different from that in the world. In the world, the development of programmable controllers is from research, development, production to application, while in China, it is from the introduction of complete sets of equipment, the introduction and application of programmable controllers, digestion and transplantation, joint venture production to extensive application. It can be roughly divided into the following three stages:

The primary understanding stage of programmable controller (late 1970s to early 1980s)

The development of programmable controllers in the world has first aroused great interest in the domestic engineering and technical circles. Therefore, China’s understanding of programmable controllers began in the introduction of complete sets of equipment from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. At that time, more than a dozen models of about 200 programmable controllers were introduced in many projects of Shanghai Baosteel Phase I Project. These programmable controllers are used in the whole steel smelting and processing production line from raw material wharf to blast furnace, steel rolling and steel pipe, replacing the traditional relay logic system, and partially replacing analog control and small DDC system. After Baosteel Phase I project, many domestic manufacturers have introduced equipment and production lines that are mostly equipped with programmable controllers, which are applied in power stations, petrochemical industry, automobile manufacturing, ports and docks and other fields. It is in the process of introducing complete sets of equipment that we have opened our eyes and learned about programmable controllers, which has also promoted the development of programmable controllers in China.

Introduction, application, digestion and transplantation of programmable controllers (early 1980s to early 1990s)

Since the early 1980s, with the deepening of China’s reform and opening up, while the introduction of complete sets of equipment, foreign original programmable controllers began to flood into the domestic market. Many departments and units have successively introduced programmable controllers and designed their own control systems, and their application scope has also expanded to the industrial fields of building materials, light industry, coal, water treatment, food, pharmaceutical, paper, rubber and fine chemicals.

With the improvement of application capability and the expansion of market demand, some departments and units are carrying out secondary development and application research on the one hand, and on the other hand, introducing production lines of programmable controllers, establishing joint ventures to produce programmable controllers, and actively developing their own products based on the principle of combining technology with trade and digesting and transplanting.

At the same time, China also began to develop programmable controller products. At that time, more than 20 scientific research institutions, colleges and universities and factories in Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Changchun and other places were developing and producing programmable controllers. However, due to lack of funds and follow-up research force, and relatively backward production technology, they could only stay in the laboratory stage, and failed to put into practical application and form industrial production.
