The basic working mode of PLC is to execute user programs in sequence, and execute one instruction per clock cycle. The execution of user programs generally includes cyclic scanning and timing scanning. The scanning process is divided into three stages, namely input sampling stage, program execution stage and output refresh stage, as shown in Figure 1.
Enter the sampling phase. In the input sampling stage, PLC reads the status of all input terminals in scanning order, stores them in the input register, and then enters the program execution stage.
Program execution stage. The PLC scans each instruction in sequence during the program execution phase. First read the status of all input terminals from the input register.
Output refresh stage. After all the instructions are executed, all the output states in the output register are sent to the output circuit and become the actual output of the PLC.
The completion of the above three stages by PLC is called a scanning cycle.
