PLC can be divided into box type and module type. Microcomputers and minicomputers are mostly box-type, but from the perspective of development trend, minicomputers have gradually developed into modular ones. For example, OMRON, the original minicomputers are box-type, and the current CQM1 is modular.

The PLC of the box integrates the power supply, CPU, memory and I/O system into a small box. A host box is a complete PLC, which can be used for control. If the number of control points does not meet the requirements, the expansion box can be connected again. The main box and several expansion boxes form a larger system to control more points.

Modular PLC is divided into several modules according to function, such as CPU module, input module, output module, power module, etc. The module function of mainframe is more simple, so the types of modules are relatively more. This is also a trend. At present, the functions of some medium-sized computers tend to be single, and the types are also increasing. Like OMRON’s C20 series PLC, the CPU unit of machine H contains power supply, while machine Ha separates the power supply and has a separate power module.

The function of the module is more simple and the variety is more, which can facilitate the system configuration, make the best use of PLC, and achieve higher use efficiency.

There are three ways to connect modules into a system:

① There is no base plate, which is directly connected by the interface between modules, and then fixed to the corresponding guide rail. The V80 series PLC of Davidson Company has this structure and is relatively compact.

② There is a backplane, and all modules are fixed on the backplane. For example, the PPC11, PPC22 and PPC31 series PLC of Davidson Company, the C200Ha machine of OMRON Company, CV2000 and other medium and large machines are of this structure. It is relatively firm, but the number of slots on the bottom plate is fixed, such as 3, 5, 8, 10 slots, etc. The number of slots is not necessarily equal to the actual number of modules, so it is unavoidable to have empty slots during configuration. This is not only waste, but also takes up more space, and the empty unit has to fill the extra slot.

③ Replace the backplane with a rack, and all modules are fixed on the rack. This structure is more complex than the bottom plate, but more reliable. Some large PLCs use this structure.
